In his most recent column, George Will of the Washington Post rails against the world’s perpetual love affair with denim, and says instead to follow this rule: “for men, sartorial good taste can be reduced to one rule: If Fred Astaire would not have worn it, don’t wear it. For women, substitute Grace Kelly.” Already, when we’re saying women and men have to dress differently, we’re getting into iffy territory. But has he thought about jeans as an equalizer? Probably not. Rich people can wear jeans. Poor people can wear jeans. Poor people cannot dress like Grace Kelly.
Mr. Will probably should have been more responsible with both his Op-Ed space and his application of Edmund Burke’s “To make us love our country, our country ought to be lovely.” Better health care and education would probably make our country much lovelier than if we all dressed like Fred Astaire and Grace Kelly.
