My friends and I went to see Watchmen last night (Happy Birthday, Nicole!), and the opening title montage is one of the most fascinating visual sequences that I’ve ever seen. Not only does director Zach Snyder deftly convey pages upon pages of material in just over five and a half minutes of film, but he also shows some real style with his inclusion of what must be hundreds of cultural details throughout the film, many of which are not a part of the source material and were presumably conceived of specifically for their incorporation into the movie. Using The Ride Of The Valkyries during the Vietnam War scene was a particularly clever reference.
